Capcom release another fighting title to AltGaming, but does it do any better than their previous titles? Arron finds out.
Capcom have brought multiple fighting games out over the past few years, and the term collection seem to go well together after the amount of games they have released. There is one main franchise that they released and still release and runs by the title Street Fighter. Anyone who hasn’t heard of this franchise might aswell stop reading this review, go out buy a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and get Street Fighter II; or alternatively go out if you have an Xbox/PlayStation2 and pick up Street Fighter Anniversary Collection which is the latest fighting title to be released by Capcom (before CFJ) as CFJ puts Street Fighter a long way down the ladder in this game. This wasn't good enough for Capcom, they have now brought us Capcom Fighting Jam; but not only does it contain characters from the Street Fighter franchise, but it also includes characters from two other of their games, Red Earth and Darkstalkers.
Retro titles aren’t exactly our strong point here at AltGaming but straight from the visible menu’s we could tell this wasn’t going to be a classy looking game. The game features three franchises of games, but 5 games are in there. Street Figher II, III and Alpha, Red Earth and Darkstalkers; and all of these contain four characters from each of these games. From the Street Fighter franchise we have Ryu, Chun Li, M.Bison, Guile, Zangief, Karin, Urien, Alex, Yun, Guy, Sakura and Rose; from Red Earth we have, Leo, Kenji, Hydron and Hauzer; and finally from Darkstalkers we have Demitri, Felicia, Jedah and Anarkaris. There really isn’t anything to talk about how the game plays other than go to arcade and battle your way through the stages and unlock the three characters available; Akuma, Ingrid and Pyron. But you do get two pick two characters who you wish to battle in each round; the first character you pick is played in the first round, and the second one in the second round; and back to the first if you manage to get defeated.
Graphically the game is poor, a retro title on the PlayStation 2. A 2D fighter, with stale graphics, horrible locations and a really disgusting menu, Capcom should’ve smartened their act up upon releasing this game. Brightly coloured menu’s does resemble the days of the SNES, but we are now in the 128bit era and really want to see improved graphics. The sounds is yet another letdown, really. Annoying theme in the background, the shout of Ryu shouting “hyduken” however did make us smile, but it doesn’t do justice.
The game isn’t hard, isn’t polished and certainly isn’t worthy of having the famous Street Fighter characters in there. Spending your time ‘button bashing’ through the stages to unlock the three characters is repetitive and doesn’t reward gamers. Capcom should be ashamed to put Ryu and other Street Fighter characters in there; as for the other two titles, what have they got on Street Fighter? Not even die hard fans would enjoy this title.
